- Henry Cavendish carried out the first experimental measurement of the gravitational constant , called the Cavendish experiment .
- Smithson Tennant provides evidence that a diamond consists of pure carbon .
- Louis Vauquelin isolated a new refractory metal (most likely, chromium carbide was obtained) from “Siberian red lead” (PbCrO 4 , the modern name is crocoite).
- Joseph Louis Proust began research that became the basis for his discovery of the law of constancy of composition .
- The Old Leuven ( obsolete. Louvain) university was closed - it existed in the city of Leuven (at that time the Duchy of Brabant , the Burgundian Netherlands ; now Belgium ) from 1425 to 1797, the university was considered the best in Europe until the 16th century [1] .
- Founded Shokheizak Academy .
- Founded A.I. Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University .
- The Russian State Military Historical Archive has been opened.
