AGAMOUS ( AG ) is a gene encoding a MADS box containing the transcription factor of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana . The gene number in the Arabidopsis Information Resource database is AT4G18960. In literal translation from English agamous means "asexual". When a mutation by this gene occurs, flower development is disturbed when petals develop in the place of stamens , and sepals in place of carpels .
