Biography

Born in 1971 in the Estonian SSR in the family of a policeman and a worker, lives in Tallinn. He studied at the Tallinn Pedagogical University with a degree in philology and Russian studies. He worked as a welder, janitor and telephone operator, lived in resettlement camps in Scandinavia.

He started writing in 2004, published in 2007 in Russian magazines in Finland and the USA. Andrei Ivanov’s books began to be published in Estonia since 2009. Published in Russian magazines ( Zvezda, etc.). Several books have been published in Russian and Estonian. The novel Hanuman's Journey to Lolland was published in Germany in German, and in 2011 was published in Moscow by AST. Member of the Union of Estonian Writers.

He had an Estonian gray passport (stateless), but in March 2018 received Estonian citizenship [1] .

Knows English, Danish and Norwegian, teaches Estonian.

  • Laureate of the international literary competition “Russian Prize” ( http://www.russpremia.ru/ ) in the nomination “Large prose” for the novel “A Handful of Ashes” (2009),
  • Laureate of the “Russian Prize” in the nomination “Small Prose” for the novel “Crisis” (2010),
  • Winner of the 2013 FNL Award,
  • finalist of the Russian Booker of 2013.
