Life and creativity

Tsanko Lavrenov was born on November 24, 1896 in Plovdiv , Bulgaria . His grandfather, Lavrenty, enthusiastically studied manuscripts, copying old Catholic illuminated manuscripts. After graduating from the French Catholic College of sv. Augustine in Plovdiv, his grandson Tsanko goes to Vienna , where he is engaged in a private drawing school of St.. Anne in 1920 - 1921 .

Landscapes of the Rila Monastery give rise to a large cycle, and the pictures painted after a visit to Athos in 1935–1936 signify the coming to full conviction in the fruitfulness of the appeal to the medieval icon painting tradition , which relied on such timeless priorities as the unity of design and execution, the animation of the plot [3] .

The artist relied on the traditions coming from the Bulgarian Renaissance, on a detailed study of ancient architecture. He devoted a lot of time to research in monasteries: paintings, mosaics, miniatures in the monastery libraries rich in ancient manuscripts. He finally realizes that only Bulgarian Zakhary Zograf (who lived a century before Tsanko Lavrenov) can be his true teacher. He depicted ancient cities and monasteries (“Old Plovdiv”), often in the natural environment of the mountains. He turned to historical, folklore themes, interpreting them in a fabulous way, sometimes resembling the world of merry dreams of fair painters [4] . The artist freely applied the laws of perspective, attaining emotional and rhythmic unity in building on the canvas a complex space of the urban environment. The painting of Tsanko Lavrenov is marked by fantasy, expressiveness of details, festivity of color .

The artist died on December 16, 1978.
