Geography

Geographical location

The city is located on the Upper Rhine Lowland , between Karlsruhe and Mannheim .

Administrative Division

The city consists of three districts: Waghoisel (an area of 222 ha, 1205 inhabitants), Kirrlach (an area of 1938 ha, 9717 inhabitants), Wiesenthal (an area of 2124 ha and 10 839 inhabitants) [2] . In the areas of Kirrlach and Waghoisel, there are only villages of the same name; the Wiesenthal area includes two railway stations, a village.

History

Since the XI century, the city was part of the Speyer Principality-Bishopric. Changes in its status date back to 1806, when secularization and German mediatization were carried out. In 1849 there was a battle at Waghoisel, one of the decisive battles during the Baden revolution [3] . In 1975, the union of three municipalities merged into one; since 2005, more than 20,000 residents have lived in the city.

The city is the 93rd largest in Baden-Württemberg. The oldest of the areas is Wiesenthal, inhabited even during the time of the Roman Empire. Here are the remains of a small castle Wagbach, built in the 1st century BC. e. The settlement in Wiesenthal was founded in 1297 at the direction of Prince Bishop Friedrich von Bolanden. The city was significantly affected by the bombing during World War II (about 100 buildings were destroyed). In 1945, the village numbered 4,809 inhabitants. This is the most densely populated area of the city [4] .

Kirrlach, whose name translates as “Church in the Forest”, was first mentioned in written sources dating back to 1234 and was built near the Speyer monastery, to which the settlement belonged until 1806. In 1945, 4649 people lived here.

The village of Waghoisel itself was founded by the Capuchins in 1616, but only in the XVIII century, when Bishop Damian Hugo von Schonborn built the Hermitage residence here, the village began to settle more actively. Waghoisel gained independence in 1930, in 1945, 298 residents lived here.

Religion

Most of the residents belong to the Roman Catholic Church, the city also has a Protestant community (exists since 1860), a mosque and two communities of Jehovah's Witnesses .
