Biography
As an engineer of communications, as well as an associate professor at the Polytechnic School at the Department of Bridges and Roads ( Fr. Corps des ponts et chaussées ), he became interested in the history of architecture, devoting several books to it, noted by critics and colleagues. Author of the works “History of Architecture” ( fr. Histoire de l'architecture in 2 volumes, 1899; Russian translation of 1910), “Building Art of the Ancient Romans” ( fr. L'Art de batir chez les Romains 1873, Paris; Russian translation 1938) and others (L'art de batir chez les Byzantins, 1883; Études épigraphiques sur l'architecture grecque, 1884), which give a thorough description of many historically developed structural systems. In 1903 he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal British Institute of Architecture for the collection of works. As an engineer, he developed the Trans-Sahara Railway project (Tangier-Tunisia), implemented in 1880.
