Biography

Born on August 4, 1770 in Saint-Amour, Franche-Comté province . On August 5, 1792 he entered the military service as a volunteer, and seven days later he was elected captain of the grenadier company of the 10th battalion of volunteers of the Jura department. He fought in the Rhine army, wounded in the battle of Vattigny. In 1795 he was transferred to the Italian army, from May 14, 1797 the company commander in the 69th linear semi-brigade. In 1798 he sailed with the Eastern Army to Egypt , and on January 20, 1799 he was enlisted in the guides of the commander in chief , on February 18, 1800 - the battalion commander.

Returning to France, on February 20, 1802 he was appointed commander of the 2nd battalion of foot rangers of the Consular Guard . Since December 23, 1803 - the commander of the 9th light infantry regiment, with whom he took part in the campaigns of 1805, 1806 and 1807, fought under Haslach, Ulm and Durenstein. In the battle of Halle he was wounded, also distinguished himself in the Polish campaign of 1807 . Since 1808, he fought in the ranks of the Spanish Army, participated in the capture of Madrid , on July 27, 1809 he was wounded in the battle of Talavera, and on January 8, 1810 he was promoted to brigadier general.

On September 1, 1811, he commanded the 1st Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division of the 1st Corps of the Southern Army. In September 1812 he was transferred to the reserve division of General Grenier , later renamed the 35th Infantry Division of the Great Army , on August 15, 1813 - commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 36th Infantry Division of the 11th Corps, wounded in the battle of Leipzig and 5 November 1813 promoted to division generals. From December 21, 1813 to March 12, 1814 he commanded the 1st division of the Young Guard, participated in the French campaign under the command of Marshal Ney, and was again wounded at Kraon.

After the first restoration, he was appointed military commander of Poitiers , during the "Hundred Days" he joined the Emperor and on April 2, 1815 he headed the 2nd Infantry Division of the Young Guard. After the repeated abdication of Napoleon, he was sent to Brittany as general inspector of the infantry; on August 1, 1815 he retired. He died on April 14, 1846 in Paris at the age of 75, and was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .

Since March 25, 1805 he was married to Laura David ( French Laure Émilie Félicité David ), the daughter of the famous artist Jacques-Louis David . The couple had an only son, Jules, the 2nd Baron Ménier (1813-1867), a notary by profession, then the mayor of Lille .
