Biography
Graduated from the Law Faculty of Beirut University of St. Joseph; He began his political career in 1968 with the election of a deputy to the National Assembly of Lebanon.
In 1969-1970 - Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister Rashid Karam . He also held the post of Minister of Posts, Telegraph and Telecommunications. In 1973 he was appointed chairman of the Supreme Islamic Council.
In 1980, as a compromise figure, without its own power base, he was appointed Prime Minister of Lebanon. Nevertheless, he managed to stay in this post until the end of April 1984. At the same time, he held the post of Minister of the Interior. His office was one of the most stable during the years of the Civil War in Lebanon (1975-1990). During the Israeli invasion of Lebanon (1982), he and the government he led acted as a mediator in the negotiations between the PLO leader Yasser Arafat and the special envoy of US President Reagan Philip Habib. At the time when the massive bombardment of Israel under Palestinian-controlled neighborhoods in Beirut began, Vazzan threatened to end the dialogue, exclaiming to the cameras: “Enough! Enough! ”As a result, American foot soldiers were introduced into the Lebanese capital as part of the United Nations Interim Multinational Force (UNIFIL), which forced representatives of the Palestinian paramilitary units and the Syrian military to retreat from Beirut.
After Lebanese President Amin Gemayel, under pressure from Syria, did not sign an agreement between the government and Israel on the withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from Lebanon, the Cabinet of Ministers completely lost the confidence of the Muslim leaders of the country. In April 1984, his government was dismissed. after which Vazzan withdrew from active political life.
In 1991, he managed to escape the assassination attempt organized in Beirut with a car stuffed with explosives.
