Biography
Jahangir Bagirov was born on October 6, 1919 in the city of Astrakhan in the family of the head of the guard service, in the future the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan Mirjafar Bagirov and his wife Maria. Azerbaijani [1] [3] . In 1926, his mother dies [4] .
On the eve of World War II, Bagirov graduated from the International Faculty of Moscow State University . In the Red Army since 1938 [5] . He graduated from the Tashkent Military School . A candidate [5] in the membership of the CPSU (b) since 1942.
On the fronts of World War II from July 15, 1941 as a platoon commander of the 616th Rifle Regiment of the Western Front [5] . Having been injured in both hands in the fighting on October 26, 1941, he was cured in a hospital. After recovery, he was sent to the Rustavian Military Aviation School [5] of the Transcaucasian Front . Upon completion of training, he was sent to the 40th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment as a pilot. Having mastered the new La-5 , from May 1, 1943 he took part in the hostilities.
He received his first baptism of fire in an air battle with superior enemy forces [5] : 22 La-5s versus 15 Me-109F, Fw-190s, up to 50 Ju-88s and Me-110s , which raided cities in three air echelons Oboyan and Bobryshevo .
In 1942 , in a heavy aerial battle near Serpukhov, Bagirov was injured in his left hand, but, despite this, he was able to expertly land the plane. Jahangir barely tolerated the hospital, wanted to return to the front as soon as possible.
In his letter to his father, Jahangir wrote that he was ashamed to look people in the eye, because he is young, healthy and sitting in the rear:
Dear Dad. For two and a half months now, after being wounded, I am not in the right place. Now, when my homeland is in danger and thousands of my compatriots are fighting the enemy not for life but for death, I am in the position of observer. And I have to be where the fiercest fights are going on. After all, I am your son, the son of my homeland, the Party. If you knew how ashamed I am to look people in the eye, because I am young, healthy and sitting in the rear. Please speed up my departure to the front. I can tolerate another week, and then I will leave in the first part, which meeting, and to the front. I look forward to sending to the front and I will prove that your son is worthy of his father and homeland. Kisses tightly, your Vladimir.
In the same letter of February 4, 1943, Jahangir wrote that he did not need vaunted foreign-made aircraft, he was ready to fly into the sky on the U-2 . After reading his son’s letter, Bagirov called for the chairman of the Central Medical Commission Mustafa Topchibashev and handed him a letter from his son. Topchibashev, who confirmed the decision of the medical examination commission on Bagirov’s worthlessness, exclaimed:
Comrade Bagirov, but your son is really unsuitable for the army. Is it possible to drive a plane with a wounded hand? It needs to be treated for about a year.
But Mirjafar Bagirov took responsibility. A week later he came to a military hospital. Having bypassed all the chambers, he went to his son. Seeing his father, Jangir raised his bandaged hand and exclaimed: "Father, I have already recovered!". Bagirov said that he had read his letter and wished him “to return alive and with Victory ...”.
On June 5, 1943, Bagirov died in an air battle [5] . As part of a group of fourteen La-5, Bagirov flew out to intercept six Ju-88s and 8 Me-109s . In this battle of the guard, Senior Lieutenant Bagirov rammed the Me-109, which, enveloped in flames, collapsed 5 km southeast of the village. White .
For this feat Bagirov was decree posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 9, 1943 . Bagirov’s body was delivered to Baku with the help of Azi Aslanov , where Bagirov was buried in the city’s Yasamal cemetery near the grave of his mother [4] .
According to the Azerbaijani historian Adgyozal Mammadov, the author of a book about Mirjafar Bagirov, they wanted to give Jahangir a star of the Hero of the Soviet Union , but Bagirov opposed, saying that it would be immodest for the son of the first secretary of the Central Committee. “How is my son different from other warriors?” Bagirov said. On this issue, Bagirov and Kalinin , who proposed rewarding Jahangir with a Hero star, even had a conflict.
During the period of hostilities in the 40th Guards. Iap Bagirov carried out [5] 19 sorties to intercept an air opponent, had a combat raid of 17 hours and 30 minutes. Participated in 5 air battles.
Father's Last Visit to the Grave
On April 26, 1956, the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR found Mirdzhafar Bagirov, along with other accused, guilty of "participation in a treasonable group and of terrorist attacks against Soviet citizens" and on the basis of Art. Art. 63-2.70 of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan SSR sentenced him together with Markaryan, Borshchev and Grigoryan to execution with confiscation of all property [6] . At the request of Mirjafar Bagirov, already sentenced to death, he was allowed to visit the grave of his son Jahangir for the last time.
Surrounded by the convoy Bagirov was brought to the Yasamal cemetery in Baku. Bagirov cried over his son’s grave, hugged a tombstone, and Azerbaijani guards asked the Russian commander not to stop the convict from saying goodbye to his son. Bagirov, sobbing, said:
I will not be able to die on the earth where you are buried.
When Mirjafar Bagirov was taken away from the cemetery, he did not take his eyes off the tombstone.
Lip Bust
In Soviet times, in the center of Guba , the hometown of Bagirov’s father, a park was established, popularly known as the “Garden of Jahangir” ( azerb. Cahangir bağı ). In 1993, the people of Guba installed a bust of Jahangir Bagirov for their money. After some time, under the bust of the pilot, whose father was a rather controversial figure, the hero’s name was first removed, and the inscription “Unknown soldier” was set under the bust. Over the history of the existence of the bust, he was repeatedly disrespectful, but he was restored again, thanks to the efforts of the inhabitants of the city. Later, in 2007, the bust was completely removed and the pedestal remained bare.
According to Bagirov's distant relative named Tagi, the bust was removed at the whim of one of the park's visitors. According to him:
We were not even warned, they came and removed the bust. Why, because he gave his life for us, he is a hero. Is that how they relate to the memory of heroes?
The deputy head of the executive branch of the city of Guba, Sahib Mammadov, said that he did not know anything on this issue. In 2013, the director of the Guba Museum of History and Local Lore, Maryam Gadzhieva, stated that the bust of Jakhangir Bagirov was in the museum, that he had been dismantled during the reconstruction of the park. According to Gadzhieva, now the bust has come to a deplorable state, in particular, part of the structure has broken off and needs restoration. Hajiyeva expressed hope that after the repair of the park, the bust will be returned to its original place [7] .
In February 2015, it became known that the bust of Jahangir Bagirov lies abandoned in the courtyard of the Museum of Local History, where he has been located for 8 years [8] .
