The shoemaker's son. He was born in the Atlantic Ocean on a ship on which his French parents left for emigration to the United States. He grew up in Ohio , in 1866 he moved to New York and got a job at a worsted combine. When the company went bankrupt, in 1874 he began his own business in the manufacture of textiles (wool, silk, cotton) and quickly succeeded. Reasonably investing in railways, banking and insurance, has acquired a solid state.

The main area of ​​Juilliard's charity has been music. From 1892 until his death, he served as President of the Metropolitan Opera . According to Giuliard’s will, a sum of $ 5 million was to be used to develop music in the United States. The trustees of the foundation established for the disposal of these funds opened in 1924 the Juilliard Graduate School ( English Juilliard Graduate School ), later transformed into the Juilliard School of Music .
