He began to learn to play the piano at the age of five under the direction of A. L. Gassman , then he graduated from the Lucerne Conservatory, where, in particular, he conducted conducting with Rafael Kubelik during the 1961-1962 school year. Later he improved as a conductor in Berlin with Herbert Alendorf .
He made his debut as a conductor in 1965 at the festival of young performers in Leesen . In 1968 he took the post of assistant conductor at the Gelsenkirchen Opera, but generally preferred to collaborate with different groups in free mode. Bachmann's strongest ties were with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (recording all Johannes Brahms symphonies), the Philharmonia Hungarica orchestra (including conducting his last concert in 2001), and the Russian National Orchestra (guest conductor at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s). In the 21st century, he lives and works mainly in Hungary, including as a professor of music in a number of Catholic educational institutions.
The key author in Bachmann’s conducting repertoire is Anton Bruckner .
