The history of the city begins with the construction of the Bodrichi fortress, called Utin, on the Fazaniy Island of the Big Oytinsky Lake . City settlement since 1156, Magdeburg law since 1257. When Lubeck became a free imperial city , the townspeople asked the bishop to leave the city and find a new place of residence, by which Oytin was elected. The main residence of the rulers of the Lübeck bishopric continued to expand and beautified until the secularization of bishopric possessions in 1803 and the transfer of Oytin to the duchy of Oldenburg .
Modern Oytin belongs to the East Holstein area . The population is 17,047 people (as of December 31, 2010). [2] Covers an area of 41.4 km². The official code is 01 0 55 012 .
An open-air theater is organized in the park of the bishop’s castle , where an opera festival is held in memory of the native Oytin - composer Karl Maria Weber .
