Life
The third son of Frederick VIII, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Adelheida of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, brother of the German Empress Augusta Victoria . Since the older brothers died in infancy, Ernst Gunther succeeded his father in 1880 as the titular Duke of Schleswig-Holstein.
On August 2, 1898, he married Princess Dorothea of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1881–1967), the daughter of Prince Philip and Princess Louise of Belgium . The marriage was childless. On November 11, 1920, Ernst Gunter adopted Prince Johann Georg and his sister Princess Maria Louise, children of Prince Albrecht Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburgskogo .
