John Bird, Baron Bird ( born January 30, 1946 , Notting Hill , London , UK ) is a British social entrepreneur and manager , creator, director and chief editor of The Big Issue , a street newspaper that combines professional journalism when creating with its distribution homeless .

Biography
John Bird was born January 30, 1946 in the London district of Notting Hill in the UK in a poor Irish family [1] . He was the third of six boys. [2]
He started wandering at the age of five, when his parents were unable to pay rent for housing [2] and lived in an orphanage from seven to ten years [1] .
As a teenager, he lived on the street, was engaged in theft and as a result ended up in prison [1] [2] . Coming out of it, he lived on the street and at the age of twenty again got into jail [1] .
He fled from the persecution of the police to Paris ( France ), where he plunged into the “revolutionary struggle”, joining the Trotskyist group of the “Working Revolutionary Party” [2] .
In 1970, he left politics and went into small business [1] .
In 1991, along with Anita Roddick , The Big Issue [3] [2] founded the Big Shop for the $ 50,000 received from the successful cosmetic business. In 1995, The Big Issue Foundation supported its brainchild and spread the ideas and the implementation of the mission to socialize and help the homeless [4] .
The success of The Big Issue Invest brought several awards to John Bird: in June 1995 he became a member of the Order of the British Empire , in May 1996 he was shortlisted for the UN Best Practice Prize, and in October 2004 received the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor Award Award , in November 2004 was named by the BBC “The Legend of London”, and in 2006 was awarded The Beacon Fellowship [5] .
In 2007, Byrd declared his determination to run for mayor of London as an independent candidate and submitted his manifesto [6] , but later abandoned this venture [7] .
In October 2008, Ernst & Young named John Bird "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" [8] [9] .
In 2009, Bird launched his own investment fund, The Big Issue Invest, to help social entrepreneurship.
Since 2013, Honorary Doctor of Plymouth University .
