Count Galloway

Earl of Galloway - The title of Peer of Scotland . It was created in 1623 for Alexander Stuart, 1st Lord Garlis (c. 1580 - 1649 ). In 1607, Alexander Stuart received the title of Lord Garlis (Peer of Scotland). The Stuart family of Garlis was in a distant relationship with the royal Stuart dynasty, which ruled in Scotland and England.

History

In 1649, after the death of the 1st Earl of Galloway, he was succeeded by the second son James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Galloway. Back in 1627, he received the title of Baronet of Corcewell in Wigtown County. His grandson, James Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway (c. 1670-1746), was a politician . He was succeeded by the eldest son, Alexander Stuart, 6th Earl of Galloway (1694-1773). In 1773, after the death of Alexander Stuart, 6th Earl of Galloway, the title passed to his eldest son, John Stuart, 7th Earl of Galloway (1736-1806). He was a member of parliament and Lord Lieutenant of Wigtaushire (1794-1806). In the years 1774 - 1796 he served in the House of Lords as head of the representation of the peers of Scotland. In 1796, Lord Galloway received the title of Baron Stuart of Garlis (Peer of Great Britain), who automatically gave him a seat in the House of Lords . He was succeeded by his son George Stuart, 8th Earl of Galloway (1768–1834). He was Admiral of the Royal Navy, Member of Parliament, Lord Lieutenant of Kerkubrishira and Wigtownshire. After his death, titles passed to his eldest son, Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl. He was elected to the House of Commons from Cockermouth County and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Kirkubrishir and Wigtownshire. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Alan Stuart Plantagenet, 10th Earl of Galloway. He was elected from Wignagutshir County to the House of Commons. He was succeeded by a younger brother, Randolph Henry Stewart, 11th Earl of Galloway (1836-1920). He was a military man, participated in the Crimean War and in the suppression of the Indian uprising of 1857. He was succeeded by the eldest son Randolph Stewart, 12th Earl of Galloway (1892-1978). He served as Lord Lieutenant of Kirkubrishir. In 1978, he was succeeded by his only son, Randolph Stewart, the 13th Earl of Galloway (born 1928).

Other clan members

John Stewart (d. 1748 ), the third son of the 3rd Earl of Galloway, Brigadier General , was twice elected to the House of Commons from the Wigtownshire region (1708-1710, 1711-1727). Keith Stewart (1739-1785), third son of the 6th Earl, admiral and member of the British Parliament. His son James Alexander Stuart-Mackenzie was the governor of Ceylon (1837-1841). His grandson James Stuart-Mackenzie (1847–1923) became 1st Baron Seaford. John Montgomery Grenville Stewart, sixth son of the 7th Earl, represented Kirkubrishir in the Commons. James Henry Keith Stewart , the eighth son of the 7th Earl, was a Member of Parliament from Bigtown Burgs. Keith Stewart (1814-1859), the youngest son of the 8th Earl, was admiral of the royal fleet. Alexander Stuart (1838-1896), the third son of the 9th Earl, was a major general in the British army.

On November 4, 1687, the title of Baronet Stuart of Barrey in Orkney County was created for Archibald Stewart. In 1704, the title of Baronet Stuart of Barray was inherited by Alexander Stuart, 6th Earl of Galloway.

The ancestral residence is located at Camloden House in the vicinity of Camloden in Wigtownshire. The former residence was in Galloway House , next to Garliston in Wigtownshire.
