Early years
Joe King was born on May 25, 1980, in the state of Colorado . He studied at the Christian Academy in the city of Arvada [2] . In school, Joe combined his studies and work as a car damage evaluator.
He learned to play the piano at an early age, but then he quit, and completely switched to the guitar .
“The coolest guys in my eighth grade were playing guitar. I wanted to fit into the team. ”- Joe King [3] .
Career
In the spring of 2002, in one of the musical shops in Denver , King met with vocalist and pianist Isaac Slade , which marked the beginning of the creation of The Fray [4] . Before this meeting, King played in the Spruce and Fancy's Show Box groups.
The Fray was finally formed after the addition of guitarist Dave Welch and drummer Ben Vysotsky to the band.
In 2002, The Fray released a mini-album "Movement EP". King's voice was heard in two songs: “It's for You” and “Where You Want To”.
In 2003, the band released Reason EP, and a year later signed a contract with Epic Records .
The Fray 's debut album, “How to Save a Life,” is released in 2005 and brings massive popularity to musicians. In addition to playing the guitar, King sang the song “Heaven Forbid” (about his sister) [5] . Joe also performed backing vocals in the compositions: “How to Save a Life”, “Look After You” and “Trust Me”.
In 2009, the album of the same name “The Fray” was released. The second composition from the album “Never Say Never” was mainly written by Joe, from his point of view on the future marriage [6] . In the second album vocals Joe became more. He performed the songs "Ungodly Hour", the bonus track "Uncertainty", and was on the vocals in the songs "Syndicate" and "Absolute".
In the 2012 album Scars & Stories, King delivered the lead vocals on the track Rainy Zurich.
Vocal and songwriting
Despite the fact that the lyric component of the group is led by Slade , King is actively involved in the compilation of lyrics. In an interview, Joe admitted that his words to the songs are mainly related to the experience gained in the group:
“Being successful, you have much more drama. I had extreme career ups and extreme downs in relationships, there were really obvious things to write about. ”- Joe King [7] .
Commenting on the lyrics of the second album of the group, King said:
“There are really a lot of big realizations about themselves on this record. We sang about the real things that we experienced. It’s actually not convenient for me to talk about it, it’s much easier to sing. This is the other side of me. ”- Joe King [7] .
Activities outside of the Fray
King recorded the track "Undertow" with Timbaland for the album " Shock Value II ". He co-produced and co-authored Alright With Me, which is included on Chris Allen 's American Idol [8] .
In April 2013, Joe, under the pseudonym "King", released his own mini-album "Breaking-EP".
