Science Fiction and Futurology ( Polish: Fantastyka i futurologia ) is a monograph by Stanislav Lem on science fiction and futurology , first published in Poland by Wydawnictwo Literackie in 1970 [1] .
Lem’s official website interprets this work as carrying a threefold function: an attempt to create a theory of the science fiction genre , an interpretation of Lem’s own works, and a review of world science fiction, which presents “a kind of Lemov’s theory of everything - everything related to science fiction and its role in acquiring knowledge by man ” [2] [3] .
The book criticized modern Lemu Western science fiction. As Lem wrote, “SF has become the vulgar mythology of technological civilization. <...> This monograph is an expression of my personal utopia, my longing for the best SF, which should be ” [2] . In a 1972 publication, Lem somewhat softened criticism, in particular with regard to the works of Philip K. Dick . Lem admitted that his opinion on the works of F. Dick was based on a limited number of his books, and far from the best [4] .
