History
By order of the NKVD of the USSR No. 00206 of 08/08/1939 "On the reorganization of the Border and Internal Troops Command" pursuant to the Decree of the Council of People 's Commissars of the USSR No. 154-16ss of 02/02/1939 "On the reorganization of the Border and Internal Troops Command" 5th separate Kiev railway brigade of troops of the OGPU USSR [1] reorganized into the 4th division of the troops of the NKVD of the USSR for the protection of railway structures .
The division’s administration and the 56th regiment were stationed in Kiev , the 55th regiment in the city of Korosten , the 57th regiment at the Shevchenko station .
Before the Great Patriotic War, the division carried out the tasks of protecting railway facilities on the South-Western Railway , the Vinnitsa Railway (after the war it became part of the South-Western Railway), the Odessa Railway , the Chisinau Railway, and the important strategic highway bridges in Kiev , Chernihiv , Zhytomyr , Vinnitsa regions . Until October 12, 1939, units and garrisons located in the border area with Poland assisted the Border Troops in guarding the state border. Then, before the start of World War II, in the protection of the fence zone, which passed along the former Soviet-Polish border. Since June 1940, units and garrisons of the 57th Regiment located in the border area with Romania assisted the Border Troops in guarding the state border.
In 1940, the anti-aircraft machine-gun companies of the division took part in the Soviet-Finnish war .
As of June 1, 1941, the number of the division was 4669 troops.

During the Great Patriotic War, the division performed the tasks of protecting railway facilities on the South-Western Railway, Vinnitsa Railway, Odessa Railway, Chisinau Railway, important strategic bridges for highways in the Kiev, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Vinnitsa regions, and high-frequency communication lines in the areas of Kiev - Nizhyn - Bakhmach - Konotop , Kiev - Grebenka - Bakhmach - Konotop, the rear forces of the 5th , 37th , 40th , 9th , 56th armies , took part in the fight against sabotage and reconnaissance groups enemy with anditizmom on UkraineUkraine and Moldova , parts and units of the division took part in defensive battles in Moldova and Ukraine , Kiev defense .
On June 22, 1941, at 4 a.m., the 2nd battalion of the 57th regiment, which guarded the railway bridges across the Prut River , was the first of the division to take on the battle with the enemy. On June 26, 1941, on the basis of the 2nd battalion of the 57th regiment, the 114th regiment was formed, which became part of the division. On June 28, 1941, the division became operatively subordinate to the chief of the NKVD troops for the protection of the military rear of the South-Western Front .
In July 1941, part of the 57th regiment of the division retreated to Odessa and subsequently took part in its defense . The 114th regiment, being in operational subordination of the Southern Front, retreated to Melitopol . The remaining divisions of the division from July to September 19, 1941 took part in the defense of Kiev, where on September 15, 1941 they were surrounded .
In the Kiev defensive operation, the troops of the division had a great influence on the course of hostilities. From July 16 to July 22, 1941, units of the 56th regiment took part in the defense of Fastov . In August 1941, the 55th regiment of the division secured the retreat of the 5th army to Kiev, destroying up to 1,200 tons of Nazis in rear-guard battles. On September 4, 1941, the 1st battalion of the 56th regiment took under guard the HF communication line connecting Kiev with Moscow . On September 19, divisions of the division were the last to leave Kiev, ensuring the destruction of all existing bridges across the Dnieper. On September 23, 1941, the 56th regiment of the division secured the exit from the encirclement of units of the 37th Army, capturing the settlement of Baryshevka and crossing the Trubezh River near it and held the crossing until the end of the movement of units of the 37th Army through it. During the battle, the regiment was almost completely destroyed. During the breakthrough from the encirclement undertaken on September 25, 1941, only 27 commanders and fighters of the regiment managed to break through.
During the Kiev defensive operation, armored trains of the division were transferred to the 26th army , fighting south of Kiev, where they died.
On October 1, 1941, the division held its last battle during a breakthrough from the encirclement in the vicinity of the village of Devichki , during the breakthrough the division suffered heavy losses and settled down into small groups, effectively ceasing to exist as a single compound. By order of the NKVD of the USSR No. 00293 dated 02/11/1942, the division was reorganized into the 25th division of the troops of the NKVD of the USSR for the protection of railways [2] .

Memory
In the village of Chubinskoye, Borispol district, in the region of which the soldiers of the division defended in 1941, in 1984, a memorial was erected to the soldiers of the division [7] .
