The Smolensk Metropolis is the metropolis of the Russian Orthodox Church , formed within the Smolensk region .

History

In accordance with the Regulation on the Regional Bishops of March 12, 1934, pursuant to the decree of the Local Council of 1917-1918 on the metropolitan districts, the Provisional Patriarchal Holy Synod formed church regions as part of several dioceses, including a metropolis with the center a of Smolensk, was formed [1] . The date of abolition is not known exactly. Most likely this happened in 1943 during the reorganization of the episcopal departments.

The metropolis was formed by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on May 5, 2015 [2] . The ruling bishop of the Smolensk diocese was appointed the head of the metropolis.

Composition of the Metropolitanate

The metropolis includes three dioceses:

Diocese of Smolensk

Territory: the urban district of Smolensk , Velizh , Demidovsky , Dorogobuzh , Dukhovschinsky , Kardymovsky , Krasninsky , Rudnyansky , Smolensky and Yartsevsky districts of the Smolensk region [3] .

Vyazemsky Diocese

Territory: Vyazemsky , Gagarinsky , Novoduginsky , Safonovsky , Sychevsky , Tyomkinsky , Ugransky , Kholm-Zhirkovsky districts of Smolensk region [2]

Roslavl diocese

Territory: Glinkovsky , Elninsky , Yershichsky , Monastyrshchinsky , Pochinkovsky , Roslavlsky , Khislavichsky , Shumyachsky districts and the city of Desnogorsk, Smolensk region

Metropolitans
