Biography

Gerasimos Priftis was born on the island of Kerkyra . During the triple, German-Italian-Bulgarian occupation of Greece (1941-1944) and with the rank of reserve lieutenant, he joined the People's Liberation Army of Greece (ELAS). He headed the 24th ELAS regiment, with which he took part in the battle of Paramitya in Epirus [2] . Later he became an adjutant of the VIII ELAS division commander of Middle Greece and headed the cryptographic department of the division. As part of the VIII division, in July 1944 he took part in one of the largest ELAS operations, the battle for the liberation of the city of Amphilochius [3] . After the liberation of the country, like thousands of other communists and former ELAS fighters, he was persecuted. In 1947 he was sent to the Makronisos Concentration Camp , where he remained until 1953 [4] . After his release, he was elected to the parliament from the Unified Democratic Left Party (EDA) in 1956 [5] and 1958 [6] . He was busy with translation activities. In particular, he translated the works of Fidel Castro into Greek. He died in Athens in 1985. The municipality of Kerkyra gave the name Gerasimos Priftis to the street capital of his native island [7] .
