VNBA season 1997 - became the first season of the Women's National Basketball Association (VNBA) , after which the Houston Comets team became the champion for the first time. This season, all the tournament participants held 28 matches in the regular season , and the playoff games consisted of only one match.

8 clubs took part in the regular season. On April 28, in Shikokas ( New Jersey ), forward Tina Thompson from the University of Southern California was selected under the 1st number by the Houston Comets club at the 1998 WNBA draft . Under the 2nd number in that draft, the Sacramento Monarchs team selected Thompson's student team partner USC Torgens , center Pamela McGee . In addition to the usual draft, the so-called VNBA elite draft was held in 1997, where defender Dina Head from the University of Tennessee was selected under the number 1 Utah Stars Club.
The regular season started on June 21 with a match between the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks teams, in which the Liberty won with a score of 67:57. This season’s regular season ended on August 24th, with MVP being recognized by Cynthia Cooper of Houston Comets . The Houston Comets team mentor, Van Chancellor , was recognized as the coach of the year . Officially, the 1997 season ended on August 30 , when Houston Comets beat the New York Liberty team in the final match, and comet quarterback Cynthia Cooper was also recognized as the MVP of the final .
