Duke Lennox

The Duke of Lennox is an aristocratic title in the Scottish peer system created for members of the clan . The ducal title, named for the in the modern administrative district of Stirling , was first created in 1581 for Esme Stewart, 7th Earl of Lennox . The 2nd Duke of Lennox received the title of Duke of Richmond, and after his death in 1624, the Duchy of Richmond passed to the English crown. The 4th Duke of Lennox also received the title of Duke of Richmond in 1641. In 1672, after the childless death of Charles Stewart, 6th Duke of Lennox, the titles of the Dukes of Lennox and Richmond went to the crown.

In 1675, King Charles II of Stewart of England re-created the title of Duke of Lennox for his illegitimate son, Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond (1672-1723). In 1876, Charles Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond and 6th Duke of Lennox , received the title of 1st Duke of Gordon. Thus, members of the clan began to own the four duchies (including the in France).
