Grace Lee Whitney name Mary Ann Chase ( born Mary Ann Chase ; April 1, 1930 - May 1, 2015 ) - American actress. She is known for her role as Janice Rand in the first season of NBC 's Star Trek: The Original Series (1966). She then repeated the role in the feature films Star Trek: The Film (1979), Star Trek 4: Journey Home (1986), and Star Trek 6: Undiscovered Country (1991) [4] .

Whitney was born in Ann Arbor and grew up in a foster family, so she changed her name. Her career began on the radio in Detroit, and in 1951 she made her debut on the Broadway stage [4] . During the 1950s, she moved to Hollywood, where she found stable work in television westerns and minor roles on the big screen. Her first significant role was in the 1963 film " Tender Irma ", after which Whitney worked on television. After retiring from Star Trek, she continued her career, appearing in the episodes Batman , Big Valley , Spouses Hart , and Star Trek: Voyager .
In 1998, Whitney wrote a book in which she said that she had been sexually abused by the directors of the Star Trek manufacturing company, as well as her subsequent fight against alcohol and drug addiction [4] .
She died at home on May 1, 2015 [5] .
