He gained fame after the release of the film " Smoke Alarms " in 1998, which became a real anthem of young Native American America. In his films, he seeks to show the history and modern life of Native Americans without embellishment and Hollywood stamps, although it is not limited to an exclusively Indian theme.

Biography
At the age of five days he was adopted by white parents from Klamath Falls , Oregon [1] . He sought out his real mother when he was 25, and maintained relations with her for the next 10 years, until the day of her death [2] . At the age of 18, he went to Oklahoma , where he achieved official enrollment in the lists of the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribe [3] .
Eyre’s short film “ Resilience ” ( Tenacity , 1995), shot during his studies at the Tisch School of Art at New York University , brought a novice director several awards and money grants, and at the same time, obviously, enough self-confidence to offer collaboration with the famous Native American author Sherman Alexi . Together, they began work on an adaptation of Alexey ’s short story book , The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven . Not the least role in the success of their enterprise was played by Robert Redford 's Native American and Indigenous Program at the Sundance Institute . In the creative workshop of the Institute, Air was free to experiment, making “drafts” for the future film [3] .
“ Smoke signals ” (1998), the debut of Eyre and Alexi in the big movie, received the prize for best directing and the audience award for the Sundance festival. It was the first sound feature film shot in Hollywood by an Indian director [4] , but the merits of the picture are by no means exhausted by its revolutionism. The story of the journey of two young men across America behind the ashes of the father of one of them is a piercing tale of growing up, duty, love and home, about universal values. In the film, the stereotypes of numerous Hollywood films about the Indians are played out with irony; it contains many jokes “for its own people”, however it is self-ironic enough for a wider audience to appreciate its humor.
Chris Eyre's second full-length film, Redskins (2002), is a love / hate story of two brothers living on a reservation, a policeman and a drunken Vietnam veteran. After The Smoke Alarms, with their lyricism and gentle humor, Eyre turned to such topics as poverty, alcoholism and senseless violence of the reservation life. However, the main theme of the film, as before, is family and human relationships.
In 2002 and 2003, Eyre also filmed 2 novels from Tony Hillerman 's famous Navajo Police series: Changing Outlines ( Skinwalkers , 1986) and Thief of Time (1988). The main roles of Officer Jim Chi and Sergeant Joe Liphorn in them were played by Adam Beach and Wes Studi .
The tape " On the Edge of America " was selected for display at the opening of the 2004 Sundance Festival. The film, based on a real biography of basketball player Jerry Richardson [5] , who undertook to train a team of girls from an Indian reservation, in 2006 brought Air for the outstanding directorial achievements of the Directors Guild of America in the category "Programs for Children and Youth" [6] .
Created with the support of the National Museum of the American Indian, the short film “A Thousand Roads” combines four stories of modern Native Americans living far from each other, but invisibly connected in a common journey to the origins of their human “I”.
In 2009, Air first turned to the American history of the development of the Wild West. He directed three of the five episodes of the PBS Channel’s We Shall Remain documentary on Thanksgiving , the extraordinary fate of the Indian political leader Tecumseh, and the tragic history of the Cherokee tribe.
The director’s last full-length film today was the 2011 lyrical drama Hide Away, starring Josh Lucas .
On February 1, 2012, Chris Eyre heads the Department of Film and Video Art at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design .
The daughter of director Shayel also became an actress.
In the immediate plans of Chris Eyre is an adaptation of Frank Herbert 's novel “ Soul Trapper ” [7] .
