Biography
Willy Smits was born on February 22, 1957 in ( Netherlands. Weurt ) in the province of Gelderland in the east of the Netherlands .
Having traveled for the first time in 1980 to Kalimantan [1] he married an Indonesian [2] Syennie Watoelangkow [3] .
Since 1985, he worked at a tropical forest research station near Balikpapan in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan .
In 1989, he found an orangutan cub thrown out by market dealers and went out [1] . Since then, he has devoted himself to protecting these animals [1] .
In the early 1990s, he led the Indonesian joint project of the Foundation and the country's Ministry of Agriculture.
In 1991, Willy Smits created the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS ) at Kalimantan (Borneo), which later became one of the largest organizations for the conservation of endangered species .
In 1994, he received his doctorate in forestry and soil science from the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands [4] .
in 2001 at {{lang-en | North Sulawesi , Indonesia ) has registered the Masarang Foundation (indonesia. Yayasan Masarang) [2] designed to solve social and environmental problems in Indonesia using the principles of social entrepreneurship [2] [5] .
On January 14, 2007, President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened [3] the Masarang Palm Sugar Factory , built by the Smiths Foundation, combining an ecological approach to production, a responsible attitude to the environment and economic feasibility [2] [ 6] [7] [8] .
The sugar factory project allowed to provide work for 6,285 farming families and preserve about 200,000 square meters of forests [9] .
After some time, the Masarang Foundation turned into an international distributed organization, opening an office in the Netherlands in 2010 (Masarang Internatiol Foundation) and in 2011 in Hong Kong ( Masarang HK Society Limited ) [5] .
Awards and Prizes
Willy Smiths was the first person of non-Indonesian descent to be awarded the Satya Lencana Pembangunan Award (1998); in addition, he was awarded the (order of chivalry) in the Netherlands (1995) [1] .
In 2005, he received Indonesian citizenship for his services to the country [1] .
