Content
Geographical position
The canton is located in the north of the Isere department. La Verpiyer borders the cantons of the Isère department: Charvieu-Chavagneux (3804), Bourgoin-Jallieu (3802), L'Ile d'Abo (3814), Bevreux (3801) and Vienne .
Canton History
The canton of La Verpiyer was created on February 15, 1790 [2] . Prior to the 2014 decree, the canton consisted of 7 communes: La Verpier , Bonfamy , Fours , Cesneuve , Roche , Saint-Quentin- Fallavier and Satolaz-e-Bons , and the population was 19066 (2011). According to the law of May 17, 2013 and the decree of February 14, 2014, the number of cantons in the Isere department decreased from 58 to 29. The new territorial division of the departments into cantons entered into force during the 2015 elections. Thus, the composition of the canton of La Verpiyer was changed on March 22, 2015. As a result of the reform, the size of the canton increased from 7 communes to 16. From the district of Vienne, the communes of the disbanded canton of Erieux were added: Dieumet, Erieux, Charentonne, Grenet, Huatier-Saint-Obloux, Saint-Georges-d'Esperance, Saint-Just-Chalessen, Valenciennes one commune of the disbanded canton of Saint-Jean-de-Bourne is Arthas. From the district of La Tour du Pins, 2 communes of the disbanded Cremieu canton were added: Frontonas and Chamagnot, and 2 communes (Fur and Cesneuve) were moved to the canton of L'Ile d'Abo [3] [4] .
Population
According to the 2012 census (considered the population of the communes that were included in the canton in 2015), the population of La Verpiyer was 43,419 people. Of these, 28.1% were under the age of 20, 13.0% were over 65. 23.0% had higher education . Unemployment - 8.5%. The active population (over 15 years old) is 21 207 people [5] .
Economics
Distribution of population by employment in the canton: 0.7% - agricultural workers, 6.8% - artisans, traders, business leaders, 16.6% - intellectual workers, 28.3% - social workers , 24.6% - civil servants and 23.1% - workers [5] .

Policy
According to the law of May 17, 2013 [3], voters of each canton elect two members of the general council of a department of different sexes during the election. They are elected for 6 years by a majority of votes based on the results of one or two rounds of elections [6] .
In the first round of cantonal elections on March 22, 2015, 4 pairs of candidates ran for La Verpiyer (turnout was 48.85%). In the second round on March 29, Damien Michelet and Aureli Vernet were elected with the support of 57.85% for 2015-2021. The turnout for the elections was 48.71% [7] .
