Popov, Alexey (historian)

Alexey G. Popov is a Russian historian. At the beginning of the XIX century was the director of schools in the region of the Don Army and the historian of the Don Cossacks. In 1812, at the request of the ataman of the Great Don Don Matthew Platov's army, he compiled and published the book “History of the Don Army” in 1814-16. In it, he led the Don Cossacks from the Amazons, argued that in Persian, Kozak means Skif and suggested that the Land of Donskaya was formerly called Kozakia. Aleksey Popov himself was obviously not a Cossack, but a Russian educated official.
