Biography
Riccardo Nenchini was born on October 19, 1959 in Barberino di Mugello (Tuscany), graduated from the Dante Lyceum (the same as Matteo Renzi , but a few years before him), studied history at the Cesare Alfieri Florentine , in 2004 received an honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester . From 1990 to 1995, he headed the branch of the Italian Socialist Party in Florence and represented it in the communal council [1] [2] .
In 1992, he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies of the 11th convocation according to the list of COIs and was a member of this party until 1994, before the expiration of the term of deputy [3] . From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of the European Parliament , a member of the Party of European Socialists [4] .
In December 2006, the European Anti-Fraud Office requested Nenchini to compensate for his excessive travel expenses and payment of the personal secretariat as a European MP (in the amount of EUR 46,550 and 409,352, respectively). On July 16, 2010, the General Secretariat of the European Parliament demanded that Nenchini make a payment, and he, in turn, made a request to cancel this requirement. On June 4, 2013, the European Court of General Jurisdiction rejected Nenchini's request, so he appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union [5] , and on November 13, 2014, he quashed the lower court decision [6] .
From 2000 to 2010, Nenchini chaired the . On July 5, 2008, at the congress of the Socialist Party, Nenchini was unanimously elected national secretary, after which, on his initiative, the party adopted the name Italian Socialist Party , thus declaring itself the successor of the old COI . On July 11, 2010 he was re-elected as National Secretary (649 votes in favor of the congress delegates, 11 against); in the same year he became an assessor of the Tuscan regional government for budget and institutional relations [7] and remained in this position until 2013.
In 2013, he was elected to the Senate , is a member of the joint faction of several parties called "For Autonomy-ISP- " (Gruppo Per le Autonomie (SVP-UV-PATT-UPT) -PSI-MAIE), February 28, 2014 became deputy minister of infrastructure and transport in the Renzi government [8] .
On December 29, 2016, he was appointed junior state secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in the Gentiloni government [9] .
In 2018, re-elected to the Senate.
Personal life
Riccardo studied in Florence as a child in the classical Dante Lyceum (who later graduated from Matteo Renzi ) and won the school competition for the great poet. Nenchini was also a friend of the writer and journalist Oriana Fallaci and described the last days of her life in Morirò in piedi. Among his books there is also a work on the history of cycling (the famous cyclist of the 1950s, Gastone Nenchini, was his uncle). Since 2005, she has been protected by the police after her harsh speech dedicated to the memory of the dead fighter with the ndrangeta in Calabria, [7] [10] .
