Riots in Baltimore (2015)

Riots or riots in Baltimore - demonstrations and riots that began on April 25, 2015, in the city of Baltimore in the US state of Maryland . The cause was the death of 26-year-old black American Freddie Gray , who died from injuries sustained after being arrested by the police. The protests at first were peaceful, but after the funeral of Freddie Gray, clashes with the police began. For restoring order to Baltimore units of the US National Guard were sent [3] .

Timeline

April 25

Protests begin on April 25 in a suburb of Baltimore. Demonstrators march from Baltimore City Hall to Inner Harbor. After the end, clashes with the police begin, during which at least five police cars were damaged, 3 policemen were injured and 34 protesters were arrested.

April 27th

Freddy Gray's funeral. The ceremony is attended by a number of politicians. After the funeral, a group of young people begins to throw stones and rubble on the bricks of the police. The police answer the protesters the same. Two patrol cars were later destroyed and 15 policemen injured.

April 28

In the morning, the forces of the National Guard begin to arrive in the city. In the morning report, the mayor of Baltimore reports that 144 cars and 19 buildings were set on fire at night, and more than 200 people were arrested. In the evening, clashes between the police and protesters throwing police bottles again begin. Military equipment appears on the streets of the city. A curfew has been introduced [1] .

April 29th

Expanding the geography of protests. In New York, protesters block traffic at key points in the city. About 100 people were arrested [4] . During the crackdown on Denver demonstrations, police used pepper gas after protesters knocked a policeman off a motorcycle and began to beat him [5] . Demonstrations also take place in Boston [6] , Seattle [7] , the District of Columbia [8] , Cincinnati , Philadelphia [9] and Minneapolis [10] .

May 1

Charges were brought against six police officers involved in the detention of Freddy Gray. [11] A police driver is charged with second-degree murder [12] ; the term of imprisonment in the case of a guilty verdict for this offense varies usually from 15 years to life imprisonment [13] .

May 3-4

On May 3, curfew was canceled [1] . The next day, the National Guard forces were completely withdrawn from the city [2] .
