Life and work
Little is known about his young years and youth. Parents - residents of the province of Cuenca - Hernando Martinez and Lucia Bueno del Maso. As a student in the workshop of D. Velazquez, the artist meets the master’s daughter, Francisco de Silva Velazquez i Pacheco, and on August 31, 1633 they are married in the Church of Madrid of Sant Iago. King of Spain Philip IV and his first minister, Gaspard de Guzmán , Duke of Olivares took part in this celebration. Already by this, Juan del Mazo was secured a place at the royal court. On February 23, 1634, Velazquez, with the permission of the king, gives his son-in-law the court post of guardian of the gates of the Royal Chamber.
In 1643, Juan del Mazo received the title of master of painting and became the personal artist of the heir to the throne, Prince of Asturias, Balthazar Carlos , who became the fifth godfather of Juan in 1645. Balthazar Carlos instructs Juan to write copies of paintings depicting hunting scenes of various Flemish masters - Jordaens, Rubens, Paul de Vos. In 1646, the artist accompanies the prince on his trip to Aragon. During this journey, Juan del Mazo creates one of his best paintings, “The Road to Zaragoza ”. as well as the last of the portraits of the young prince, who died soon at the age of 16. After the death of Prince Balthazar, King Philip IV draws Juan del Mazo to himself.
At the royal service, the artist copies the canvases of famous Venetian masters: Tintoretto, Titian and Paolo Veronese. He also managed to reveal the secrets of the great masters of the Flemish school, primarily Rubens and Jordaens, whose works were also copied at the direction of the king. Along with his father-in-law, Diego Velazquez, painted portraits of members of the Spanish royal family (“ Portrait of the Marigarita Teresa of Spain ”). The works of del Mazo were distinguished by the realism and naturalism of the image, the thoroughness of the execution of the details of the drawing. rarely signed his canvases, since many of them were created together with Velazquez. A significant number of paintings by Juan del Mazo can be seen in the Madrid Prado Museum, next to the works of D. Velazquez. In addition to landscapes and hunting scenes, he also created a number of still lifes.
In 1657, the artist, together with his eldest daughter Ines, makes a trip to Italy, where he visits Rome and Naples. Here he writes his “ Arch of Titus ”, reflecting his impressions of Roman landscapes. After Velazquez's death in 1660, on April 19, 1661, King Philip IV appointed Juan del Mazo as his court painter, and Juan's eldest son, Gaspard, assumes his court position as guardian of the gates of the Royal Chamber. After the death of Philip in 1665, Juan retains his title during the regency of Queen Marianne of Austria , whose portrait in morning dress he paints in 1666 (now in the National Gallery of London).
