Biography

Born in 1869 in San Francisco, California, whose father, being a native of England , started an insurance business in San Francisco.

From 1886 to 1888, Gray attended the California School of Design ( English California School of Design ), where he studied with Arthur Matthews . Then he became an illustrator of the newspaper, then worked in the New York Journal . In New York, he attended the Art Students League . From New York, he was sent to eliminate the 1906 San Francisco earthquake , deciding to stay in his hometown.

Initially, Gray worked in oil, but because of the developed allergy to oil paints, he switched to the use of watercolors. His works were exhibited at exhibitions in 1907. For some time he studied with William Chase in working with light and color.

From 1912 to 1923, Percy Gray lived in Burlingame, California, twenty miles south of San Francisco, while maintaining his workshop in the state capital. In 1915, at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition, he won a bronze medal for one of his watercolors.

At 53, Gray married and he and his wife moved to Monterey , California, where they bought a house. In 1939, they sold the house and returned to San Francisco. In 1941, they moved to a town in San Anselmo , Marin County , lived at the foot of Mount Tamalpais. After ten years in the marina, Gray's wife died and he returned to San Francisco, where he died on October 10, 1952 from a heart attack.
