Description

“Bhutan News Service” began its work in 2004 in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu [1] . It is one-of-a-kind media , since only refugee journalists from Bhutan work in it. The agency is exclusively run by refugees, mostly born or raised in refugee camps and lacking media experience [2] .

History

When more than 100,000 Bhutanese refugees needed their own media , attempts were made to create several journalistic agencies in refugee camps in the Jhapa and Morang areas in eastern Nepal. However, to survive this media was not easy due to lack of funding, and they ceased to exist one after another [2] . The Bhutanese News Service was founded in 2004 by a small group of Bhutanese refugees. Initially, the service was carried out on blogs . Since 2006, the Bhutan News Service has its own news portal on the Internet . Currently, about two dozen journalists and half a dozen editors from different countries work as volunteers in this news service. The news agency has not yet been registered since Nepalese legislation does not allow the registration of any property subject in the ownership of foreign citizens in the territory of Nepal [3] .
