History

The Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1662 by city council member Joachim Nützel von Zünderbühl, engraver Jacob von Zandrart and architect Elias von Gedeler. The first classes of the new art school took place in the house of von Zandrat. In 1674, the Academy moved to the building of the former Franciscan monastery, and in 1699 to the premises of the monastery of St. Katarina . At the same time, a decision is made to begin financing the academy at the expense of the city budget.

In 1716, director Johann Preisler founded a free art school for artisans' children, which became two years later part of the academy.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Academy came under the state guardianship of the Kingdom of Bavaria and, since 1820, has been referred to as the “Royal School of Art”. In 1818, she was transferred to the territory of the Nuremberg Fortress , then from 1835 she was located in the Landauer House of the Twelve Brothers and in 1897 she moved to the building specially built for the academy on Flashenhofstrasse.

In 1833, Ludwig I lowered the status of the academy to the school of art craft, which was associated with the realization of the idea of “production in Nuremberg and art in Munich ”. The main center for the development of painting, sculpture and architecture in Bavaria is the Munich Academy of Arts .

It was possible to restore the status of the academy only in 1940, the full name began to sound like "The Academy of Fine Arts of the city of the Imperial Party Congresses of Nuremberg." In 1943, after the demolition of the building on Flashenhofstrasse, the academy was evacuated to the residence palace in Ellingen .

After the war, classes were held in Ellingen until 1954, when the academy was able to return to Nuremberg in the premises designed by Zep Ruf in the eastern part of the city on Bingstrasse. Since 1985, the academy has also been using the premises of the Lauf an der Pegnitz castle [1] .
