Ecosia's goal is to plant a billion new trees by 2020 [3] [4] . As of January 2017, the company has already contributed to the planting of over 6 million trees in the forests of Brazil [5] .
Ecosia GmbH was established in December 2009 [3] [4] . Located in Berlin ( Germany ) [3] [4] .
The creator and director of Ecosia - Christian Kroll ( Christian Kroll ) [2] [4] - initially invested in the company 10-20 thousand euros of own funds [2] . In April 2014, Tim Schumacher , co-founder of the largest domain name operator Sedo [2] [6], became the co-owner of the company.
The Ecosia model allows you to transfer from 20 to 100 thousand euros per month for declared purposes (according to 2013-2014). In 2014, 550,000 searches per day were made through the system [2] .
Search results and advertisements for the site are supplied by Bing ( Microsoft ) and Yahoo! [1] [4] . Google refused to cooperate according to a similar scheme at the stage of one of the preliminary versions of the system ( Forestle ), referring to the “cheating” by users who want to “push” the maximum number of advertising updates; however, Google did not consider it necessary to analyze and screen out software [2] [4] .
Part of Ecosia's revenue comes from partnership programs with online stores and other projects [4] .
The company strives to adhere to an environmentally friendly approach to all of its activities. For example, purchasing electricity for servers from renewable sources [4] . Nevertheless, critics point to the possible environmental inefficiency of the proposed methods of nature conservation, since search vendors do not reveal their energy balances; this information is indirectly confirmed in the company itself [4] .
The company is expanding its activities by creating a multilingual search, offering applications for mobile devices, extensions for classic browsers and Ecobrowser based on Chromium .
At the time of the launch of Ecosia, there were already search engines on the market based on a model for allocating a portion of funds for environmental purposes, for example, EcoSearch, Envirosearch, GoodSearch and GoodTree [1] [2] . Other projects, such as Green Maven and EcoSeek, allowed searching sites related to environmental protection [1] [2] . Projects Treehoo and Ecocho were aimed at offsetting carbon dioxide emissions [1] . For 2015, some of these projects were not preserved or restructured.
