History

The battleship "Iowa" was the lead ship of the latest series of American battleships. It was commissioned in 1943 [1] , passed the Second World War , served during the war in Korea and the Cold War . During the service received 11 battle stars, served as the flagship of the three American presidents. On September 6, 2011, the ship was transferred to the Pacific Battleship Center in California ( California ), which was the base of the from 1919 to 1940.

On October 27, 2011, the ship was transferred from the to the port of Richmond (California) for painting and renovation [2] . On May 27, 2012, on the day of the 75th anniversary, the ship was towed under the Golden Gate Bridge to the final stop at the port of Los Angeles [3] . On July 4, 2012, the museum was opened in the presence of more than 1500 spectators on the quay 87 of the port of Los Angeles [4] . The museum holds daily excursions, group programs, educational visits, film screenings, military ceremonies, and night programs are being prepared.

Day trips include visits to the largest guns of the US Navy (406 mm, length 50 caliber) [5] , officers' cabins, President Roosevelt's cabins, armored chopping, rocket decks, sailor cockpits, a canteen, helicopter deck and other facilities. The ship is located on the territory of the Los Angeles World Cruise Center [6] , nearby there is parking for 2100 cars.

The battleship participated in the filming of several films and TV shows, including “ Marine Police: Los Angeles ”, , , . On the ship annual events are held: meetings of veterans of Los Angeles (City of Los Angeles Veterans Appreciation) [7] , Memorial Day Celebration [8] , Days of Sept. 11 [9] .
