Scream ( Dutch: De Schreeuw ) is a memorial in in Amsterdam dedicated to the memory of the Dutch film director, producer and journalist Theo van Gogh , on November 2, 2004 by radical Islamist .

The monument to the work of sculptor was selected from 150 works submitted to the competition, the jury of which included Van Gogh's parents. It was installed at the edge of the Osterpark park, not far from the crime scene on in the eastern part of the Dutch capital. The 4.6-meter tall monument is six steel strips sticking out of the ground, curved in a shape resembling the profile of Theo van Gogh's face. On the one hand, his face is depicted with his mouth open in a scream, and on the other with his face closed. The opening of the monument was delayed for six months due to the settlement of formalities necessary for its installation.
The grand opening took place on March 18, 2007 in the presence of the father, two sisters and friends of van Gogh, as well as officials led by Amsterdam burgomaster Job Cohen . According to the representative of the city administration, Martin Verbet, “Scream” was to become a symbol of freedom of speech . During the ceremony, the theme of freedom of speech was repeatedly emphasized, as the reason for the death of Theo van Gogh was his harsh criticism of radical Islam in his work. One of the friends of the deceased cinematographer who attended the event, actor , performed a song also dedicated to freedom of speech [1] .
On September 15, 2007, the monument became a victim of vandalism: Al Qaeda and the date 27-11-2007 were written on it with a black marker. No offenders were found [2] .
