Fahrawi, Karim

Karim Fahravi ( April 1962 - 12 [1] 2011 , Manama ) is a Bahraini journalist. He was arrested by Bahrain police and beaten to death. He became the second journalist who died during the uprising in Bahrain [2] [3] [4] [5] .

Biography

Karim Fahrawi lived in Manama [6] . In 2002, he became one of the founders of the newspaper, which became the only independent newspaper in Bahrain. Owned a bookstore. He was a member of the largest opposition party in Bahrain, " [7] [8] .

On April 5, 2011, Karim Fahrawi was arrested by the police after he stated that the police threatened to destroy his home [3] . At the same time, the Bahrain government accused the Al-Vefak newspaper of engaging in “news-making and falsification.” It was also announced that the government intends to indict three employees of the newspaper and deport two more from the country [4] .

Fahrawi died a week after his arrest, on April 12, 2011. Police officials said the journalist died of kidney failure , but later photos of the body of the deceased journalist were published, showing bruises and signs of torture [3] [4] [9] [1] .

Subsequent Events

UNESCO Director- General Irina Bokova demanded an investigation into the death of a journalist [2] [10] .

On May 31, 2012, journalist was assassinated, posting pictures of Fahrawi’s body on the Internet [5] .

Two police officers who killed Karim Fahravi to death were sentenced to 7 years in prison. [11]
