Biography
In the 1970s, Mackenn was an active member of the Irish Republican Army and traded weapons. The police arrested him and threw him in jail . While in the 3rd H-block of the prison, Mackenn made friends with Kieran Najent and took part in a blanket protest [2] [3] . After his release, he continued his political activities and in 1987 was elected to the Belfast City Council [4] . In 2003 and 2007, Mackenn was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly from West Belfast [5] .
In 2006, Mackenn was accused of disturbing public order: in West Belfast, two policemen (a man and a woman) were about to arrest a teenage girl for trying to rob, but Mackenn stood up for the girl, fighting with the police. In his defense, he stated that the police mocked the girl and he simply protected her from beating. Mackenne was released on bail. [6] [7]
