Biography

From 1739 to 1758 he carried the title of Marquis Blandford . The eldest son of Charles Spencer ( 1706 - 1758 ), the 5th Earl of Sunderland ( 1729 - 1758 ) and the 3rd Duke of Marlborough ( 1733 - 1758 ), and Elizabeth Trevor ( 1713 - 1761 ), daughter of Thomas Trevor, 2nd Baron Trevor .

George Spencer was educated at Eton College .

Career

In 1755, George Spencer became the ensign of the Coldstream Guards Regiment, in 1756 he was promoted to captain of the 20th Lancashire Infantry Regiment.

On October 20, 1758, after the death of his father, George Spencer inherited the title of Duke of Marlborough and took his seat in the House of Lords in 1760 . In the same year he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire .

In 1761, the Duke of Marlborough carried the scepter with a cross at the coronation of the English King George III . In 1762 he became Lord Chamberlain , as well as a secret adviser . In 1763, the Duke of Marlborough became Lord Guardian of the Lesser Seal , held this position until 1765 .

An amateur astronomer, he built a private observatory in his residence, the Blenheim Palace. He conducted a lively scientific correspondence with the German diplomat Hans Moritz von Bruhl, another aristocrat and amateur astronomy.

In 1768 he was a Knight of the Order of the Garter , from 1786 - a member of the Royal Society of London .

Family

The Duke of Marlborough on August 23, 1762, in London, married Lady Caroline Russell (1742/1743 - November 26, 1811), the daughter of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford (1710–1771), and Gertrude Leveson-Gover (1715–1794). The couple had eight children:
