Biography

She was born in Amsterdam in the family of a lawyer and trader Willem Bakker and Magdalena de la Kaurt. Her parents collected works of art. She received a good home education - she was fluent in French, Italian and English, had extensive knowledge in the fields of history, religion, mathematics, music and art. She studied painting as a child. The artist's work was influenced by her teacher, Jan van Huisum and Willem van Miris , as well as paintings by Rachel Ruysch .

She married a cousin, a textile merchant and art collector, Allard de la Courta in Leiden on August 25, 1711. Four children were born in this marriage: two died in infancy, another daughter died in her youth, the son was a mentally ill person.

Her husband owned one of the richest art collections in the northern part of the Netherlands. Most of the collection passed to him by inheritance from his father Peter de la Kaurt. The meeting was constantly replenished. In 1713, portraits of the spouses were painted by the artist . After her husband died in 1755, Katerina Bakker continued to replenish the collection and was actively involved in painting. The album with drawings by the artist is kept in the archive of Amsterdam.

After the death of Katharina Bakker in 1766 in Leiden, her collection of works of art was auctioned. Only 215 paintings. But her canvases were kept in the artist’s family until 1914, after which they were also sold. A special place among her works is still lifes with fruits and flowers.
