Physico-geographical characteristics
The volcano Corazon is located in the south of the province of Pichincha , in the spur of the Andes Western Cordillera in Ecuador. The capital of Ecuador, Quito, is located 40 kilometers northeast of the volcano. 15 kilometers south-west of the Corazon volcano is located Ilinis volcano (5248 meters above sea level) [2] . The western side of the peak is covered with snow all year round. The highest point of the volcano is located on the edge of the crater [2] . The volcano is located in the north of the national park, in good weather it can be seen from Quito [3] .
From the top of the volcano, you can see other volcanoes: Ilinis , Cotopaxi , Ruminjavi, Pasochoa [3] .
According to an ancient Aztec legend, the name of the volcano came from the name of the giant ( Señor Gigante de Piedra, Corazón de Lumbre ), who fought against the barbarians. The legend also mentions a strong earthquake and volcanic eruption [4] . According to another version, the volcano got its name because of its characteristic shape: the volcano resembles a heart (Spanish: Corazon ) [3] .
2 routes lead to the summit, one of the middle category (T3), the other more difficult (T4-T5) [3] .
