Biography

Julius Franz is the youngest son of Duke Julius Heinrich of Saxe-Lauenburg and his third wife Anna Magdalena (d. 1668), daughter of Baron Wilhelm Popel von Lobkowitz. The prince was brought up in the Catholic faith .

In 1666, Julius Franz came to power in Saxe-Lauenburg after the untimely death of his older half-brother Franz Erdmann . Julius Franz managed to buy back the city of Möln and other lands of Saxe-Lauenburg, which had been laid down for several centuries by Lübeck . After the death of his mother, Julius Franz lived mainly on his estates in Bohemia. On November 20, 1665, he acquired the Kupferberg estate. March 17, 1676 received from the emperor the rank of cavalry general. In 1687, he founded glass production in Yliustal .

Julius Franz rose to the rank of Field Marshal in the imperial army . On March 6, 1682, he recruited his own regiment of Saxe-Lauenburg cuirassiers in Bohemia and in 1683 took part in the second defense of Vienna .

After the death of Julius Franz in Saxe-Lauenburg, a struggle broke out for his inheritance. Shortly before his death, Julius Franz transferred his daughters to the protection of Emperor Leopold I. Although female inheritance was permitted in Saxe-Lauenburg, the emperor imposed sequestration on the duchy. The daughters of Julius Franz preserved only their Bohemian possessions, and they themselves moved to an aunt in the Reichstadt Palace. Julius Franz became the last duke of Saxe-Lauenburg from the Askaniev clan, with his death the Saxe-Lauenburg-Ratzeburg line died out, and the title passed to the Braunschweig Welfs . The Slagkenwerth Palace was later inherited by Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden .
