Story
In 1921, the sisters from Poland, Eva and Magda, arrive in New York on Ellis Island in search of a better life. Magda is quarantined due to her lung disease. Eva is going to be deported, but Bruno notices that she is fluent in English and bribes the police to be released. Bruno brings Eva to her home and, knowing that she needs money, invites her to dance and engage in prostitution.
Eva finds her relatives living in New York, but her aunt's husband hands Eva to the police. She is sent back to Ellis Island and is going to be deported. While there, she is present at the performance of the illusionist Emile, who turns out to be Bruno's cousin. The next morning, Bruno manages to free Eva.
Eva meets Emile again when he gives a performance in the theater where she dances. He asks to help him on stage, but when she leaves, the audience begins to insult her. Bruno swears with Emil and in the process Bruno and his girls are kicked out of the theater. Emil falls in love with Eva, which annoys Bruno. A conflict arises between them, which ends up being arrested overnight by Bruno.
Emil enters Bruno's house to meet with Eva and promises her that he will get the money to free her sister. At the same time, Bruno returns home, and Emil has to hide. Bruno promises to arrange a meeting with her sister. Emil interrupts Bruno and threatens him with an unloaded pistol. He pulls the trigger to frighten him, but Bruno kills Emil with a knife.
Bruno and Eva hide Emil's body, but one of the prostitutes tells the police that Eva killed Emil. Bruno hides Eva from the police, but he is severely beaten and a large sum of money is taken from him. Eva finds out that all this time Bruno had the money to free her sister, but he did not want to give them, because he was afraid that she would leave him. Eva again turns to her aunt, who this time gives her money. Eva frees Magda and they buy tickets together to go to New Jersey .
