Spencer Churchill, George Charles, 8th Duke of Marlborough

George Charles Spencer-Churchill, 8th Duke of Marlborough ( May 13, 1844 - November 9, 1892 ) - British aristocrat and English peer . The eldest son of John Spencer-Churchill ( 1822 - 1883 ), 7th Duke of Marlborough ( 1857 - 1883 ), and Lady Francis Ann Emily Wayne (1822-1899), daughter of Charles Wayne, 3rd Marquis of Londonderry. He wore the titles of Earl of Sunderland (1844-1857) and the Marquis of Blandford (1857-1883). Lord Randolph's elder brother Henry Spencer Churchill and Winston Spencer Churchill's uncle.

Early life and education

Born May 13, 1844 . In 1857 - 1860 he studied at Eton College , then entered the military service, in 1863 he received the rank of lieutenant of the Royal Horse Guards.

In January 1871, George Spencer-Churchill, along with his younger brother Randolph, entered the Masonic lodge at Churchill's house in London .

In July 1883, after the death of his father, George Spencer-Churchill inherited the title of Duke of Marlbor, becoming a peer of England . He was promoted to deputy lieutenant of Oxfordshire .

On November 9, 1892, 48-year-old George Charles Spencer-Churchill, the 8th Duke of Marlborough , died in Blenheim Palace . He was succeeded by his only son, Charles Spencer-Churchill, Marquis Blandford , who became the 9th Duke of Marlborough.

Family and Children

1st wife - Lady Alberta Francis Ann Hamilton ( July 29, 1847 - November 7, 1932 ), daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, and Lady Louise Russell, daughter of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford . The wedding took place on November 8, 1869 at the Palace of Westminster. The couple divorced on November 20, 1883, shortly after George Spencer-Churchill inherited the title of Duke of Marlborough. The couple had four children in marriage:

  • Lady Francis Louise Spencer-Churchill ( September 15, 1870 - November 13, 1954 ) husband since June 6, 1893 Sir Robert Gresley, 11th Baronet
  • Charles Richard John Spencer-Churchill ( November 13, 1871 - June 30, 1934 ), 9th Duke of Marlborough
  • Lady Lillian Maud Spencer-Churchill (July 9, 1873 - January 4, 1951), husband from October 6, 1898 Colonel Cecil Grenfell (1864-1924)
  • Lady Nora Beatrice Henrietta Spencer-Churchill (September 1, 1875 - April 28, 1946), husband from December 1, 1920, Francis Bradley Bradley-Burt

During the marriage, the duke of Marlborough was born the illegitimate son Guy Bertrand (born November 4, 1881 ) from a relationship with Edith Pierce-Williams (d. 1897 ), the wife of Henige Finch ( 1849 - 1885 ), 7th Earl of Aylesford.

2nd wife - Lily (Jane) Warren Price ( 1854 - 1909 ), daughter of Commander Cicero Price ( 1805 - 1888 ) and Elizabeth Homer Payne ( 1828 - 1910 ), widow of the American millionaire Louis Carre Hamersley (d. 1888 ). Civil marriage took place on June 29, 1888 at the New York City Hall, the ceremony was led by New York Mayor Abram Stevens Hewitt. The church ceremony took place on the same day in a Baptist church. The second marriage was childless.
