Lee, Yunas (writer)

His first story, Den Fremsynte (Clairvoyant, 1870), carrying the story of Paul and Virginia to the Far North, immediately brought him great fame. Further works include Fortaellinger fra Norge (Norwegian Tales, 1872), Tremasteren Fremtiden (Three-masted vessel Future, 1873), Lodsen og hans Hustra (Pilot and His Wife, 1874), Rutland (1880) , Gaa poa (1882) - Lee was an artist of northern nature, faithfully depicting the idyllic and at the same time working life of Norwegian sailors and fishermen. Less successful, despite certain poetic beauties, dramatic works by Lee - Faustina Strozzi (1875) and Grabovs Kat (1880), as well as stories from the life of the upper classes: Thomas Ross (1878) and Adam Schrader (1879). The novel Livsslaven (Sentenced to Death, 1883, published in Russian in 1884) put Lee on a par with Bjørnson and Ibsen . This is the story of a man who is honest by nature, but as a result of the first mistake, he is irresistibly falling lower and lower. She is full of realism and at the same time poetry; subtle psychological analysis does not cause conviction, but a feeling of compassion for a broken life. With even greater force, Lee's artistic talent manifested itself in the novel Familien pa Gilje (1883). The invigorating humor with which it penetrates sharply shaded the ennobling power of suffering, renunciation and reconciliation. Lee’s later works: En Malström (1884 - the story of the fall and death of a provincial aristocratic family) were also distinguished by the softness and evenness of tone, the conciliatory nature of the overall impression, and the freshness of colors. Kommandörens Dottre (1886; on the absence of higher public interests prevailing in some parts of Norway), Et Samliv (“Living Together”, 1888 - depicting a difficult family life created by marriage of convenience). A picture from the life of the lower classes of the Christian population, dark and heavy, Lee gave to Maisa Jons . In the novel Niobe (1893), he portrayed the "fathers and children" of modern Norway, a collision of their religious, political and social ideals. Lee's short stories were published in the collections of Fortaellinger (1885) and Trold (1891 and 1892).

In Norway at the beginning of the 20th century, Lee was the most popular writer. He was especially successful in the types of young girls, pure and sensitive, full of energy and at the same time graceful, living a life of heart and yet possessing firmness. At the same time, as a rank for the humiliated and insulted, Lee appealed not so much to a feeling of compassion as to higher justice. Lee's works have been translated into almost all European languages; Russian translations were published in various magazines.
