Physical-geographical characteristic
Mohanda Volcano is located in the northern province of Pichincha, Ecuador, in the Eastern Cordillera Spur in the Andes . The city of Otavalo, the nearest large settlement, is located about 10 kilometers to the northeast of the volcano. The distance to the capital of Ecuador, Quito, is about 40 kilometers to the south-west. 35 km to the east of Mohanda is the Kayambé volcano (5790 meters, the highest point of the province of Pichincha), Imbabura volcano is located 20 kilometers to the northeast (4609 meters). At the foot of the volcano is located Lake Mohando [2] .
Volcanic eruptions
Mohanda belongs to the class of inactive stratovolcanoes. Mohando Volcano has a complex geological history. The basis of the modern volcano are the remains of earlier volcanoes that were active at the same time. Mohando Volcano supposedly had calderas that were destroyed by eruptions. Subsequently, the volcanic cone was partially destroyed by eruptions, which left behind a new caldera containing 2 lakes. The Fuya-Fuya Volcano (isp. Fuya Fuya ), consisting of andesites and rhyolites , was formed about 165,000 years ago as a result of two Plinian eruptions , which also formed a large caldera. Later, several more lava domes were formed, presumably in the Holocene period [2] [3] .
