History
World Championships
Conducted by the IIHF at the initiative of the USSR Hockey Federation and the Czechoslovak Hockey Union. Youth teams made up of hockey players under the age of 20 are allowed to participate in the championship. Until 1977, 3 tournaments with the status of unofficial world championships took place; since 1977, the world championship has the status of an official tournament. The USSR national team debuted at the world championships in 1974 in Leningrad . The first medal was the gold won in the debut championship. Over the next six years, the USSR team invariably mined gold medals. In 1981, the team could not defend the title and took only third place, becoming a bronze medalist. In the 1982 World Cup, the team remained outside the top three winners, contented with only 4th place. The youth team was able to fully rehabilitate for the previous tournament the very next year, having won gold at the home tournament in 1983 in Leningrad . Gold was also won in 1984, 1986, 1989. In 1985, the Soviet youth team, as in 1981, was content with bronze medals; in 1988, 1990 and 1991 - silver, and the 1987 championship was the most disastrous for her. At that championship, the USSR team was disqualified for a fight in the last round match with the Canadians, but even if that fight did not happen, our hockey players would take only 6th place. The youth team of the USSR held the last world championship in 1991 and took only second place. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a team called the CIS won gold medals in the 1992 World Cup.
