GLUT5

GLUT5 ( GLUT-5 , glucose transporter type 5 ) is a fructose carrier protein in the apical part of enterocytes of the small intestine [1] . GLUT5 provides the transfer of fructose from the gastrointestinal tract to enterocytes through facilitated diffusion due to the high concentration of fructose in the digestive tract. GLUT5 is also expressed in skeletal muscle [2] , testes , kidneys , adipose tissue ( adipocytes ), and the brain [3] .

Fructose malabsorption is a digestive disorder of the small intestine caused by a lack of GLUT5 in enterocytes [4] .

In humans, GLUT5 is encoded by the SLC2A5 gene , which is localized on the 1st chromosome [5] .

Regulation

The absorption rate of fructose by the GLUT5 protein is significantly affected by diabetes mellitus , arterial hypertension , obesity , fructose malabsorption and inflammatory processes . However, age-related changes in the ability to absorb fructose are not explained by the level of GLUT5 expression [6] [7] [8] . The simultaneous presence of glucose improves the absorption of fructose, sorbitol - worsens [9] .
