History
In 876, the first documentary reference was made of the Niedertsimmern as an independent area in the “Tithing Debate” between the archbishops of Fulda and Mainz at the Cathedral in Ingelheim [Requires verification, only the 994 Cathedral of Ingelheim was mentioned in the Cologne Annals, where “the case of the lawlessness of two bishops was considered” , 876 - the death of Louis.]
After the end of the Thuringian count war (1342 - 1346) between a number of representatives of the old aristocracy and the Wettins for domination in Thuringia, the area was transferred to Erfurt by Count von Orlamunde as a reward for loyal service. Thus, in 1346, with his communal lands, the Niederzimmern ended up on the eastern border of the Erfurt region. At the same time, to guard the border, a watch tower 252 meters high above sea level was erected, which became a local symbol.
After the Vienna Congress, Niederzimmern moved to the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, which received the status of Grand Duchy at the Congress.
In 1852, there were two churches in Niederzimmern, the Church of St. Boniface in the village of Upper and Lower Wigbertkirche in the village. The first was destroyed in 1854, there were 2 schools near the church and one parish. Wigbertikirche comes in old areas at the beginning of the 15th century. It is worth looking here for images from the Old and New Testament galleries and, in particular, the emblem.
Niederzimmern is famous for its mourning hall, which was built in 1914.
Kurt Kluge (* 1886 † 1940) designed a monument to the fallen in World War I.
Five kilometers northeast of the Niederzimmern is the Buchenwald Memorial. Ten kilometers eastward is Parkhol Cave with five hundred meter underground tunnels, the Goethe and Schiller Monument in 1857 in front of the National Theater, the Bauhaus Museum and the Schiller House in Weimar.
