Early Creation

Elliott Erwitt was born in France in a family of Russian Jews [2] . He spent the first 10 years of his life in Italy, then the family moved to France, and from there in 1939 to the USA [3] .

In 1942-1944 he studied photography in Los Angeles [4] . In 1944, Erwitt's parents divorced, his father did not pay child support, and the young man had to raise funds for his own life [2] . As a student at Hollywood High School, Erwitt works in a commercial dark room, making “autographed” prints for film fans.

From 1948 to 1950, he studied cinematography at the New School of Public Research in New York [4] .

Photographer career

In the 1950s, Erwitt worked as an assistant photographer in the US Army, in Germany and France. After he worked as a free photographer for Collier's , Look , Life and Holiday magazines. In 1953, he joined the Magnum Photo agency, which currently allows him to freely engage in photo projects around the world.
